Information for Publishers

For more than 30 years, librarians and educators have been using American Reference Books Annual to select and purchase reference materials for their collections. ARBA and ARBAonline influence decision-makers and purchasers throughout the library and academic communities. University libraries and large public libraries rely heavily on the authoritative reviews, and are the most frequent users of ARBA. Additionally, as ARBA reviews frequently appear in such companion volumes as Recommended Reference Books for Small and Medium-sized Libraries and Media Centers, thousands of school libraries, smaller public libraries, and special libraries are also informed of your reference works.

Although the staff of ARBA closely monitors the publication of reference works, it is challenging to maintain thorough coverage with the recent proliferation of new titles and works. If you are not currently submitting your reference materials for review, we encourage you to do so. You will benefit from exposure to an important segment of your market. Please read the following criteria and instructions for inclusion of your works in future editions.

ARBA Reference Resource Inclusion Policy

To be included in ARBA, books, Websites, and CD-ROMs must have a copyright date reflecting the last two years and be English-language resources published in the United States or Canada. When submitting Websites for review, please include a user name and password and the time limit allotted for review. The main categories of resources reviewed by ARBA include: dictionaries, encyclopedias, indexes, directories, bibliographies, guides, concordances, atlases, gazetteers, yearbooks, almanacs, indexing and abstracting services, and other ready-reference materials.

Resources specifically not included are books of 48 pages or fewer, those produced by vanity presses or by the author as publisher, and those generated by library staffs for internal use. Highly specialized reference works printed in a limited quantity that do not appeal to the general library audience may also be omitted.

Publishers who want to have books reviewed may send books, catalogs, and/or press releases to the ARBA office for consideration.
